THE PASSIONATE GATHERER

The gatherer takes many trips.
Unconsciously scoping out the inevitable and undeniable disparities.
Dancing with souls and ancient remnant – based atrocities.
Peering through the window shops of intrusive hypocrisies.
All the while trying to remain in [(white)] – balance.
[Breathe deep they say. Go to the beach and spend the day.]
So, she snaps pics and creates flicks to remember what the locals and the dead can never forget.
The putrid stench of capitalism and the uncomfortable contempt has her emotionally spent.
The gatherer wholeheartedly repents
In full-mode resentment…she attempts to enjoy her trip.

INSIGHT: This poem was inspired by my birthday trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica in April 2019
I was excited to be going somewhere different for my birthday. When I told everyone my plans, people started warning me not to go out alone and told me not to talk to strangers, stay in the resort areas only, etc. The second day I was there I ventured out on my own (as I took this trip by myself).

As time passed, I became despondent because of all the lack I saw there. I couldn’t help but notice the inequalities and the disparity I encountered during this “Peace Retreat Vacation”. I became quite overwhelmed at the suffrage in the eyes of almost every local person. It was at that time, I realized the plight of inequality for people of color was rampant in every little corner of the globe. And “The Passionate Gatherer” was my outcry, my voice, my representation and my experience of Montego Bay.
